After that it was kinda slow, and even a bit boring for a little while. I had to pee a lot since I wasn't allowed to eat anything and was just drinking a lot of cranberry juice and chewing on yummy ice. I was getting a little uncomfortable with consistent contractions but nothing major. We texted the fam to see everyones guesses for when I'd have this baby and how much she would weigh, and I even watched a couple friends episodes on my phone. I had guessed that she would make her debut at 1:45am on January first, and Jonathan had guessed that she would come at 11:11pm on New Years Eve.
I had to adjust a lot cause my hips were killing depending on which side I was laying on. Around 12:45pm Jonathan was massaging my hip for me when I heard this "pop" and felt a gush of fluid come out of me! My water had broken on its own! It was so gross haha! Like SOOOO much liquid that would continue to come out with every slight movement. Turns out it was also a bit discolored which meant that baby girl had pooped in the womb. So the nurse assured me it wasn't too bad, but that the NICU team would be in the delivery room when Baby came to make sure she didn't breath in any of the meconium while being born.
With my water being broken, I knew that stronger contractions would be coming on soon so I had it in my mind to just last as long as I could before getting the epidural to hopefully have this baby sooner. Doctor Lovelace stopped by not too long after this all happened just to be filled in on what was going on, he was surprised my water had broken on its own, and when he checked my cervix and said I was only at 2.5cm I was super bummed! I was really hoping to have been further a long and I was just afraid that the whole experience was going to be so long again like it was with Hallie since he broke my water with her when I was only at a 2. Anyways, about 20mins after my water broke I suddenly was in excruciating pain with every contraction. I was hanging onto those moments between contractions where I could breathe and didn't want to die, but then a new one would come along every 2-3mins and it was unbearable! But I was so determined to get further along on my own without the epidural because I really didn't want that to slow things down. At 2:15, I couldn't take it anymore however. I was disappointed in myself for only lasting just over an hour, but when my nurse said I could try a pain killer through my IV first I was all over that idea. It took effect immediately, and almost knocked me out and made me feel super drowsy, so it definitely calmed me, but also turns out it only really helped the pain of the contractions for a couple minutes maybe, so by 2:30pm I said screw this, I cannot do it anymore and get me the freaking epidural. I would just hunch over writhing in pain in the fetal position clinging to the bedrail and Jonathan's hand for dear life in between bouts of throwing up and make the strangest noises I'd never heard come out of my mouth before haha! Once I'd made the request for the epidural it took a solid 20+ mins for the anesthesiologist to get there, I'm sure I wasn't exactly a pleasant patient for him, but we got in position for the giant needle to do it's thing. That was one hard part for sure though is being perfectly still when you have a massively painful contraction going through you! Once the epidural is in, it takes another 20+ mins for it to fully be in effect, and in the meantime I keep saying over and over that there's just SOOOO much pressure and even more intense and painful contractions, I was seriously loosing it. But when I finally was able to calm down for a minute and feel the painkiller start to work I had my nurse check me (cause again, I still couldn't believe how much pressure I was still feeling) so at 3:15pm turns out I was already at 7cm! So in just two hours I went from 2.5 to 7 centimeters! I was so happy! Even though I'd just gone through hell I was stoked that I had got that far on my own!
After that, I needed a little break. It's exhausting being in so much pain. So we turned the Pitocin off and let me enjoy some pain free minutes. But then my body was like, nope! We're doing this. I started contractions on my own and by 4:10pm I was at 9.5cm, +1 station and 100% effaced! My nurse told me that Dr. Lovelace's other patient who was delivering that day also was in at a similar point that I was in labor so we were hoping to get me to progress faster so I wouldn't have to wait on the doctor. Turns our I was progressing super fast and was feeling the contractions again, not nearly as bad, but definitely feeling the pressure and knowing it was almost time to push. We did a practice push or two and Doctor Lovelace came in, nurses were in and out getting things all set up, and by 4:45pm it was go time! Dr. Lovelace and Nurse Jen were so proud of my pushing saying I was doing a great job, it was crazy for me to know and have to tell everyone each and every time I had an intense contraction like, 'ok, I've gotta push!' And at 5:12pm I was doing my last push, Doctor tells me to stop halfway through as he's getting baby's head out (turns out she's Sunny Side Up!) and she is here! They whisk her away real quick to the table with the NICU nurses and Jonathan supervises, assuring me that everything is ok and they're making sure she just didn't breathe in any of the meconium. Luckily she checked out just great and I got to have her a few moments later! She was so precious, and so much darker than we imagined especially compared to Hallie. She had quite a bit of dark hair, super dark eyes, and beautiful olive skin. She weighed 7lbs 10oz (which was MY guess as a matter of fact!) was 19.5inches long, and has type B+ blood type. She was perfect and we were instantly in love!
After I got stitched up (the sunny side up factor did a number on me apparently) and cleaned up, we snuggled our girl for a while, I nursed her which she took to like a champ right away, we ordered some food (I was starving! although, the food wasn't as good as I was hoping lol) and then we made our way up to the recovery floor.
We wanted Hallie to be able to meet her baby sister on the day she was actually born, so after Lyla had her first "bath" we had the family come visit around 9pm. Hallie was instantly obsessed and it was the cutest thing ever to see her love her baby sis! It was kinda sad too because she didn't want to leave with Nonie and Papa and was crying wanting to stay with us... but after and hour or so we said our goodbyes. The rest of the night was a bit of a blur of sleep deprivation and being interrupted by nurses and beeping monitors every half hour it seemed like. Even into the day, just when I'd think I could close my eyes for a few minutes, another nurse, or someone doing some sort of testing would come interrupt, it was super annoying and we couldn't wait to leave! I was feeling awesome, and so surprised in comparison to after delivering Hallie, I would randomly take some ibuprofen here and there but felt no need for pain killers and was able to be up and walking and going to the bathroom and taking a shower, no problem, it was great! We pretty much just had to wait until 5:30pm to be discharged because they want you to wait at least 24hrs after baby is born, but both of us were healthy and ready to go and excited to be going home!
Check out all that hair!
When we got home my inlaws had made a cute banner again and dropped off soup heated up in a crock pot, super sweet. They met us back home a few mins after we got there so we could have Hallie home with us for our first night as a family of four! As soon as she walked in she says "Hi mom! Where's my baby?" haha and then she starts singing the sweetest songs to her. We sure love our girls and are so blessed!
